It Sounds Like Joe Thomas Might Never Play Football Again

Cleveland Browns star Joe Thomas’ future in football seems very much in the air at this point.

Thomas tore his triceps Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, and is now “discussing his options for what’s next,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

I hate to see stuff like this. Thomas has been an ironman on the field unlike any others we’ve seen during the past decade. It doesn’t sound too promising when Schefter says he’s discussing options for the future.

That sounds like thinly veiled retirement talk. Thomas has played in the NFL since 2007, and has made more than $100 million during that time period. It’s highly unlikely that he needs more money. At some point, you have to question when it’s time to hang it up, and a horrific injury can speed up that decision timeline.

It’s just really unfortunate if he never plays again, even if it’s the best option. The NFL needs guys like Thomas out there.
