An op-ed for the Independent’s Voices section Tuesday claimed people should not shame Harvey Weinstein for being overweight.

Jamie Tabberer, a freelance journalist who focuses on LGBTQ issues, wrote in the piece that criticizing Weinstein for being overweight discredits the context of his alleged sexual abuse.

“Casey Affleck, Ben Affleck and Johnny Depp are just three of Weinstein’s better-looking contemporaries recently accused of mistreating women whose careers are still relatively intact,” Tabberer wrote. More than 50 women have come forward with sexual harassment and assault allegations, and Tabberer says mentions of his appearance are “irrelevant” to reporting because “monsters come in all shapes and sizes.”

Many of Weinstein’s alleged victims have criticized the producer’s physical appearance when speaking out about his reported abuse, such as Lea Seydoux who called him “fat” and Kate Beckinsale who called him “unattractive.” Tabberer wrote in response, “Weinstein is six feet tall – his overbearing physicality is a fact. The victims are right to describe it,” however, discussing it further is “irrelevant.”

The fact he allegedly “looks the sort” allows them to “get away with it,” Tabberer stated. He added that he does not “care about his feelings” despite calling out Weinstein’s fat-shamers.

Weinstein has since lost many awards such as the British Film Institute Fellowship award, the DuBois Medal for his commitment to African American culture, and France’s Legion of Honor.
