A gunman is still at large after killing a Grambling State University student and visitor late Thursday night.

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Department of Grambling, La. pronounced 23-year-old Earl Andrews, a senior at the school, and Monquiarious Caldwell, a 23-year-old friend visiting Andrews, dead at the scene, reported The Washington Post.

“We’re processing evidence right now, trying to develop our suspect,” Maj. Stephen Williams of the sheriff’s department told WaPo. Williams described the incident as “an altercation that started inside one of the dorm rooms and spilled out into the courtyard,” stating that police found no weapons at the scene of the crime.

The shooting occurred during Grambling’s homecoming week, an event typically precipitating a rise in visitors to the historically black university.

“It’s a horrible thing to happen on any day of the week, any week,” Will Sutton, Grambling’s director of communications, told WaPo. “It’s particularly unfortunate that it’s Homecoming Week, an annual, joyful series of days, where we have people returning home to campus….Nobody wants to return to something like this.”

The school remains open with normal business hours. The university will host a vigil Thursday evening.

“This tragic incident appears to have occurred between persons that knew each other, to some extent at least,” said Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone in a statement sent to The Daily Caller News Foundation. “There are no indicators that this incident bears any resemblance to any of the random acts of violence or domestic terrorism that have been experienced around our country in recent weeks.”

“The suspect is described as a black male with no additional identifiers to offer,” said a sheriff’s department press release obtained by TheDCNF.
