The U.S. State Department released a statement Thursday recognizing the United States stands with and supports all intersex people’s “ability to live freely.”

“In recognition of Intersex Awareness Day [on Oct. 26], the United States stands in solidarity with intersex persons and their advocates around the world,” the statement reads.

An intersex person is born with a mix of male and female characteristics.

“When those most marginalized in society are afforded equal protection and opportunity, global security and stability are strengthened,” the statement adds.

Former President Barack Obama’s administration also recognized the day last year, saying the U.S. is a proud member of the Equal Rights Coalition that supports the human rights of intersex people.

“We recognize that intersex persons face violence, discrimination, harassment, and persecution on account of their sex characteristics,” the State Department’s statement Thursday said. “Intersex persons routinely face force medical surgeries without free or informed consent,” it added, noting that these interventions harm their physical integrity as well as their ability to live freely.

The Intersex Day Project website features numerous posts about different intersex persons, including one article titled “Intersexy Fat.” In the piece, Georgiann Davis wrote about being fat and intersex. She “owned” her identity and created the hashtag #IntersexyFat on Twitter.

Intersex Day of Solidarity on Nov. 8 represents another day marked for celebrating people born with biological characteristics outside of the normal makeup for female or male bodies.
