California transgender adults are more likely to be white, suicidal, and have medical issues than individuals who identify with their biological gender, a new University of California, Los Angeles study shows.

An annual California Health Interview Survey released on Tuesday found that of roughly 92,000 transgender adults in California, 35 percent of the transgender respondents who have had multiple sex partners in the past years are HIV-positive and only two percent of “cisgender” adults were HIV-positive. Cisgender people identify with their gender assigned at birth.

Sixty-four percent of California transgender adults are white and 39 percent of cisgender Californians are white, according to the study.

The Williams Institute and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research study conducted between 2015 and 2016 included telephone interviews with 32,227 Californians ages 18 to 70, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Twenty-two percent of transgender respondents have attempted suicide and four percent of cisgender respondents tried to do so.

Sixty percent of transgender adults said they have an emotional, mental or physical disability and 27 percent of cisgender adults said the same. More than 80 percent of transgender adults, however, reported that they had a health care provider.

The survey also showed that 32 percent of transgender people fall below the poverty line and 28 percent of cisgender adults sit below the line. Sixty-four percent of transgender people said they had a hard time finding enough to eat and roughly 45 percent of cisgender people said the same.

Despite finding similarities in wealth and other well-being categories, the study shows there are obvious gaps, said lead author Jody Herman, an LGBT researcher at UCLA’s Williams Institute.

“It also shows that we should work more with families, educators, communities and employers — everybody — to reduce anti-trans discrimination,” Herman added.
