An attorney who was representing The New York Times asigned off on a security agency attempting to prevent the outlet from publishing allegations against Harvey Weinstein, according to The New Yorker.

David Boies, an attorney representing The NYT during a libel suit, was the lawyer who signed the contract telling Black Cube, a security agency hired by Weinstein, to find information to stop the outlet from running sexual harassment allegations against the Hollywood mogul, The New Yorker reported Monday.

The firm Boies worked with had a contract with Black Cube and paid two of the agencies for the reports they created. Boies, who was working for The NYT at the time, said there was no conflict of interest in his work.

“We should not have been contracting with and paying investigators that we did not select and direct. At the time, it seemed a reasonable accommodation for a client, but it was not thought through, and that was my mistake. It was a mistake at the time.” Boies told The New Yorker, admitting it was a mistake for his firm to work with the agencies.

Boies never forced the outlet to try to drop the story, he said, adding that he told Weinstein it was unlikely that The NYT would not publish the story due to threats.

The NYT responded to the recent reports of Boies contracting a firm looking into them while he was also working for the outlet, calling it “Intolerable conduct, a grave betrayal… It is inexcusable, and we will be pursuing appropriate remedies,” the outlet said in a statement to CNN’s Brian Stelter.
