The two women who claimed they were lost at sea for five months insisted Wednesday they are not lying despite speculation from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiava, two women from Hawaii who were rescued by the United States Navy, after claiming they were lost at sea for five months, sat down with “Today Show’s” Matt Lauer to insist that they are telling the truth.

The women claim that they were lost at sea after originally attempting to set sail May 3 on an 18-day vacation on their 50-foot sailboat called the Sea Nymph from Hawaii to Tahiti. The women claim that severe storms broke their engine and they did not have any forms of communications.

“It really felt a lot bigger,” said Appel in regards to the storm, however, NASA imagery shows no sign of a storm around the Hawaii area during their timeline.

Appel and Fuiava also reaffirmed that they were attacked by sharks which were “absolutely terrifying,” according to Appel. Scientists, however, say that sharks do not usually interact in such a way.

Despite the alleged shark attack the women never used their emergency beacon to contact the Coast Guard. If an emergency beacon is used, it would alert satellites if there was an issue with the trip, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Appel added that in regards to their rescue, they are thankful for the “the man upstairs, who gave us grace and allowed us to still be here today.”
