A former Obama energy official warned against seeking a radical approach to cutting carbon emissions while speaking on a panel at the United Nations’ climate conference in Bonn, Germany.
“If we really care about climate change, then we have to stop siloing ourselves into communities where we only talk to ourselves,” natural gas executive Amos Hochstein told a cautious audience, according to Axios.
Hochstein lead the Bureau of Energy Resources at the Department of State under former President Barack Obama. He spoke on a panel with two senior White House officials, as well as executives from the fossil fuel and nuclear industries.
Other panelists echoed Hochstein’s remarks, pushing for more investment in “dramatically underfunded” carbon-cutting technology in coal plants and more support for zero-emission nuclear power.
“Nuclear energy needs to be part of the conversation here at this climate conference,” said Lenka Kollar, the director of business strategy at an nuclear power company. “I believe everyone should have a seat at the table.”
The U.N. conference focused far more on the future of renewable energy sources, rather than energy from fossil fuel or expensive nuclear power. The message from the Trump administration broke from what had been the common theme, according to The Hill.
“This panel is only controversial if we choose to bury our head in the sand and choose to ignore the realities of the global energy system,” Trump’s adviser on energy and environment George David Banks told the crowd.
