Texas State University suspended all Greek activities Tuesday after the death of a 20-year-old pledge.
San Marcos Police Department found Matthew Ellis, a Texas State Phi Kappa Psi pledge dead Monday morning at an off-campus apartment complex, reported ABC News.
A preliminary police investigation suggests that alcohol could have played a role in the pledge’s death, though toxicology test results from an autopsy on the former student are not yet available.
“As president of Texas State University, I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our students,” said Denise M. Trauth, president of the school, according to a statement obtained by ABC News. She issued a suspension on all of the Greek organizations “until a thorough review of the Greek Affairs system is completed.”
Trauth charged Dr. Joanne Smith, the school’s vice president of student affairs to review the frats and sororities with the intent of reinstating those that “demonstrate a commitment to the core values of Texas State and the ideals established by their respective national organizations.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the entire [Texas State] student body during this difficult time,” said Mark Guidi, Phi Kappa Psi’s executive director. The national Phi Kappa Psi had suspended the Texas State chapter before Ellis’ death and after the school began reviewing the fraternity’s activities after a September complaint.
Texas State’s Phi Kappa Psi did not have a social event scheduled for Sunday night, at least not according to the school’s Greek life calendar.
Florida State University also banned Greek life in November after a student’s death.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Texas State, as well as the school’s Phi Kappa Psi chapter for additional comment but received none in time for press.
