Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck says he fully expects his department to investigate even more high profile sex crimes committed by Hollywood stars in the near future.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) already has 28 active investigations into Hollywood and media types for sexual misconduct in the wake of the explosive allegations against Harvey Weinstein this fall. The department has also referred 37 investigations to other jurisdictions where they believe the alleged crimes occurred. Beck says his department is anticipating even more stars to be brought down, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“We anticipate the LAPD and other jurisdictions will receive even more high profile sex crime reports in the coming weeks and months,” Beck told the L.A. Times. “We encourage all victims of sexual assault to come forward to report these crimes.”
The LAPD has devoted five teams of detectives to handle the onslaught of allegations, which those accused have mostly denied. Mega-star Kevin Spacey issued an apology while claiming he remembered events differently from his accusers.
While the statute of limitations has already expired for many of the crimes being reported to police, the LAPD said it wants anyone with a story to come forward.
“We recognize the significant trauma these victims suffer at the hands of the predators who commit these heinous crimes,” Beck said, according to the L.A. Times. “Our detectives are coordinating closely with our local prosecutors and other police agencies including the NYPD. The high profile nature of these particular cases has not changed our unyielding commitment to seek justice for all victims of sexual assault.”
