President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday that new sanctions will be imposed on North Korea in response to the country’s latest ballistic provocation.

The North tested a new, more powerful intercontinental ballistic missile before dawn Wednesday. The ICBM, which Pyongyang calls the Hwasong-15, is believed to have a range which puts all of the continental U.S. within striking distance. In the face of this new threat, Trump said, “This situation will be handled!”

The president spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping Wednesday, urging the Chinese leader to use “all available levers” to rein in the rogue regime. Trump has reportedly also been in contact with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on matters related to North Korea and its illicit weapons programs.

North Korea is facing serious U.N. sanctions imposed, as well as unilateral sanctions put in place by the U.S. and its allies in the Asia Pacific. While these strict sanctions are strangling the North’s economy, the regime continues to produce missiles and nuclear weapons capable of threatening the U.S. and its neighbors with nuclear destruction.
