The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) chairman said Thursday the organization will never support Republican Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore due to the multiple allegations that he had sexual contact with teenagers.
“Roy Moore will never have the support of the senatorial committee. We will never endorse him. We won’t support him,” Republican Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner told The Weekly Standard. “I won’t let that happen. Nothing will change. I stand by my previous statement.”
Gardner’s denunciation comes days after the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced they would provide funding to Moore’s campaign after initially cutting off support in November in the wake of the allegations. The support of the NRSC is instrumental to Republican Senate candidates as the organization provides monetary and strategic support.
Gardner called for Moore’s expulsion should he be elected in November after he was accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl, and pursuing romantic relationships with multiple teen girls while in his thirties.
A number of prominent Republicans joined Gardner in calling for Moore to withdraw, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Tuesday he would immediately call for a Senate Ethics Committee investigation if Moore is elected.
“I believe the individuals speaking out against Roy Moore spoke with courage and truth, proving he is unfit to serve in the United States Senate and he should not run for office,” Gardner said in a statement. “If he refuses to withdraw and wins, the Senate should vote to expel him, because he does not meet the ethical and moral requirements of the United States Senate.”
Moore’s polling numbers fell in the aftermath of the accusations, but he has since recovered. He enjoys a slight lead in the polls days before the Tuesday election.
