Former MSNBC contributor Sam Seder will return to the network, after the company initially cut ties with him over a tweet about rape.
“I appreciate MSNBC’s thoughtful reconsideration and willingness to understand the cynical motives of those who intentionally misrepresented my tweet for their own toxic, political purposes,” Seder said in a statement to The Intercept. “I’m proud that MSNBC and its staff have set a clear example of the need to get it right.”
Seder came under fire after tweeting about disgraced Hollywood director Roman Polanski, and said if his daughter was ever raped, he hoped it would be by someone of Polanski’s stature.
“Don’t care re Polanski, but I hope if my daughter is ever raped it is by an older truly talented man w/a great sense of mise en scene,” the deleted tweet read.
Alt-right media personality Mike Cernovich was the one who brought the 2009 tweet to MSNBC’s attention, and it was said to have provoked “disgust” among network executives, according to The Wrap.
“Sometimes you just get one wrong,” MSNBC president Phil Griffin told The Intercept, “But we’ve heard the feedback, and we understand the point Sam was trying to make in that tweet was actually in line with our values, even though the language was not. Sam will be welcome on our air going forward.”
