Baker Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy Saturday night, and it’s a great reminder how many awesome things about college football he represents.

College football is all about rising to the occasion and separating the men from the boys. Sports are a meritocracy, and Mayfield thrived in that system.

He had very little interest from major college programs coming out of high school and had to walk on at Texas Tech. He ultimately left and walked on to Oklahoma. The rest is history.

Look, I’ve been very critical of Baker Mayfield’s off the field actions and the attitude he has had at times. That doesn’t mean he’s not an incredible player.

He went from being a walk on to being a Heisman winner. It doesn’t get much better than that. Mayfield’s rise to the top of the mountain represents everything that we love about sports. He was overlooked, plays with a chip on shoulder, won the Heisman and will now have a shot to win a national championship.

You can dislike some of the things he’s done, but you’re an idiot to not respect how far he’s come.
