Democrat Doug Jones won the Alabama Senate race Tuesday, besting embattled Republican Roy Moore in a close race.

Jones is the first Democrat to win an Alabama Senate election since 1992. Jones received an outpouring of national support from Democrats following sexual misconduct allegations against Moore.

Moore, a former state supreme court chief justice, denied all allegations against him, and was endorsed by President Donald Trump. But many Republican establishment figures, including Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, came out against Moore.

Jones’ victory is a positive signal for Democrats heading into the 2018 midterms. Democrats just came off a Virginia gubernatorial win and positive results in local elections around the nation.

The Democrat also won as a pro-choice candidate in the deep red state of Alabama. An MSNBC exit poll found that 54 percent of Alabamians think abortion should be illegal.

The victory is also a rebuttal to Trump’s political influence. Trump won 62.1 percent of the vote in Alabama during the presidential election.
