Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky announced Tuesday afternoon that he will vote against any budget resolution that adds to the national debt.

“I cannot in good conscience vote to add more to the already massive $20 trillion debt. I promised Kentucky to vote against reckless, deficit spending and I will do just that,” Paul announced in a video on Twitter Tuesday.

Senators agreed last week on a budget measure that will keep the government funded through Dec. 22, at which point lawmakers will once again have to come to an agreement to avoid a government shutdown.

Paul is signaling that he will not work with his Republican and Democratic colleagues in the Senate if they propose raising the debt ceiling.

GOP Sen. Bob Corker shares Paul’s concern about the fiscal state of the nation. Corker voted against the Senate’s tax reform bill because it would increase the federal deficit.
