Former NBA player Charles Barkley said the Tuesday election of Doug Jones to the Senate was a wake-up call for the Democratic Party to stop “abusing” the votes of the black community.
Barkley, when asked if he had a special message for President Donald Trump after the Alabama election, declared Jones’s election was a moment for Democrats to begin thinking about poor people and the black community again.
“This is a wakeup call for Democrats and I’ve told this to Doug Jones and I love Mr. Jones,” Barkley responded to CNN anchor Jake Tapper. “They’ve taken the black vote and the poor vote for granted for a long time. It’s time for them to get off their ass and start making life better for black voters and for people who are poor. They’ve always had our votes and they abused our votes. But this is a wake-up call for Democrats to do better for black people and poor white people.”

Jones beat Roy Moore in the race for the former Senate seat of Attorney General Jeff Session. Moore, followed by accusations of sexual misconduct with minors, has demanded a recount in the election.
