In an editorial that reached a fevered pitch, USA Today’s editorial board ranted about President Donald Trump for his tweet stating that New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand “would do anything” for campaign contributions.

“A president who would all but call Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand a whore is not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library or to shine the shoes of George W. Bush,” the editorial reads.

Mainstream media outlets quickly covered the editorial, and the Washington Post noted that readers would be wrong to think “this is just more criticism from another liberal editorial board … USA Today strives for political neutrality even on its opinion page.”

USA Today’s editorial board also stated that Trump’s remarks show “he is not fit for office,” and declared the Gillibrand tweet a “new low.”

While the editorial board noted that both “Obama and Bush…failed in many ways,” it concluded that the current president is “uniquely awful,” “sickening” and “corrosive.”

Vox Media proclaimed the screed “the most anti-Trump editorial of the year,” and applauded the “Trump takedown.” New York Magazine curated the editorial’s “best burns.”

When asked by Politico about the encouraging liberal response, USA Today Deputy editorial page editor David Mastio said he was “completely shocked.”

While USA Today does not formally endorse candidates, the language used about the president represents a serious shift in the paper’s editorial tone.
