Apple says it purposefully slows down old operating systems running on older iPhones in order for the naturally deteriorating batteries to be able to keep up.

The powerful tech company has been accused of downgrading technology on a number of occasions, including the very recently released iPhone X. Apple vehemently denied that particular accusation, as well as others before, but is admitting to the reduction of computing power in this instance because it says it helps reduce the chances of the quasi-antiquated smartphones shutting down suddenly, according to The Verge.

“Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices,” said an Apple representative. “Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.”

Nevertheless, because of a myriad of technical problems from Apple, as well as some arguably hypocritical actions, some internet users questioned Apple’s intentions.

A fix, or reversion to a faster operating speed, essentially requires the purchase of a new battery, which may be convenient for a profit-seeking business like Apple, but also more aptly an inherent need for aging energy storage cells.
