President Donald Trump succeeded at getting Saudi Arabia to end its blockade of goods to Yemen, which is facing a humanitarian crisis due to a lack of supplies.
Trump has gotten increasingly worried about the crisis in Yemen, according to a Wednesday CNN report, and reportedly told United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May that he is “fired up” about it. Millions are starving in Yemen and the country is facing a cholera outbreak.
The U.S. announced Thursday that Saudi Arabia will allow goods to freely pass through the port of Hudaydah. The announcement comes after Trump spoke on the phone with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
“We also welcome the news that four U.S.-funded cranes will be installed at this port, which are vital to moving life-saving goods into Yemen efficiently,” U.S. Agency for International Development spokesman Clayton McCleskey said in a statement.
Yemen is currently engaged in a war against Houthi rebels, who the U.S. and Saudi Arabia allege are supported by Iran.
