The recent removal of a signature feature of the 2009 Affordable Care Act essentially repeals the law over time, President Donald Trump declared in a Tuesday tweet.

The individual mandate feature of the Affordable Care Act required citizens to purchase health care insurance and was repealed by the recent passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Removal of the individual mandate without repeal of other regulatory strictures, however, does not essentially repeal Obamacare, a recent Daily Caller News Foundation fact check found.

“Repeal of the individual mandate is certainly a significant victory for congressional Republicans; it’s one of the most controversial provisions of Obamacare. Yet the change is modest compared to prior Republican attempts at repeal,” TheDCNF found.

Trump first issued the claim during a celebratory speech Wednesday after successful passage of the Tax Cuts And Jobs Act saying “I hate to say this – but we essentially repealed Obamacare because we got rid of the individual mandate, which was terrible.”
