British Columbia is set to offer free abortion pills for all women who want them, regardless of their age or reasons for abortion.

“The provincial government will soon be providing universal, no-cost coverage for the drug Mifegymiso,” the government’s Tuesday press release reads. “Removing the cost barrier helps ensure that individuals can access this safe, legal and available option if they choose,” the statement continues.

Starting Jan. 15, all women in the province will be able to access the free abortion pills with no restraints, aside from having a valid prescription for the pill from a doctor. The pills previously cost women roughly $300, according to the Ministry of Health. Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia also offer free Mifegymiso.

The change in British Columbia law comes after Ontario recently passed a law preventing pro-lifers from expressing their views in front of Ontario’s eight abortion clinics, as well as pharmacies that provide abortion pills, according to The Independent. The Canadian provinces British Columbia, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador already have similar laws. (RELATED: Ontario Bans Pro-Life Organizers From Rallying Outside Abortion Clinics).

The announcement also follows a debate among California lawmakers about whether to adopt Senate Bill 320, which will mandate that the state’s community colleges and public universities provide women with abortion pills for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy so they don’t face the “burden” of traveling to obtain an abortion.
