Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times contributor Paul Krugman thinks members of the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are some of “the worst and dumbest” people who will doing anything to shill for the president’s agenda.

Krugman wrote an op-ed Monday in which he labeled the president a “mediocre man,” who is “erratic, vindictive, uninformed, lazy,” and a  “would-be tyrant.” While the characterization is unflattering, Krugman says is not necessarily a problem if the president is surrounded with competent, law abiding cabinet members and aides.

The problem for Krugman is that he does not see the presence of either “first rate public servants” within Trump’s administration, nor does he see the typical system of “checks and balances” that would work to restrain a president “who might otherwise have been tempted to ignore the rule of law or abuse their position.”

Krugman points to ousted National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price as two prime examples of the types of people the president chose to surround himself with in first year in the White House.

“While unqualified people are marching in, qualified people are fleeing,” Krugman wrote. “In other words, just one year of Trump has moved us a long way toward a government of the worst and dumbest.”

The only people left that can restrain the president are failing to do so, according to Krugman. For example, the economist believes Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is running interference for the administration in the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 president election.

The bottom-line, according to Krugman, is that while the first year of Trump’s administration was bad, it will only get worse. He predicts that Trump could bring the entire American experiment crumbing down.

“We spent more than two centuries building a great nation, and even a very stable genius (reference to Trump) probably needs a couple of years to complete its ruin,” Krugman wrote.

Krugman wrote an op-ed Christmas Day that claimed America is on the verge of collapse under the leadership of “dictator wannabe” Trump, claiming the only thing that will save the nation is the “resistance.”
