Facebook is set to introduce a new device with advanced microphones and facial-recognition technology, leading some to be excited, and inevitably others to be worried about the privacy implications.

Called “Portal,” the gadget will also have a 15-inch screen and a camera, according to Metro.co.uk.

With its first consumer hardware offering, Facebook seems to be trying to penetrate another market as many apparent competitors, like Amazon, Apple, and Google, have. Much like Amazon Key, a relatively new service where package deliverers get access to customer’s homes, many are concerned tech companies are seeking even more information on their customers.

The product was designed by a mysterious Facebook department known as Building 8, that is reportedly developing “science fiction-like brain-scanning technology” and other futuristic projects.

Then again, there are others who are highly trusting of Facebook, or at least feel as if the prospective benefits of the technology outweigh any privacy worries.

Facebook did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment by time of publication.
