Arizona Republican Senate candidate Joe Arpaio is continuing his crusade against former President Barack Obama, insisting once again during a Wednesday radio interview that the Hawaiian-born Democrat forged his birth certificate to conceal his immigrant identity.
The brash former sheriff announced his candidacy Tuesday, but said he won’t let his political ambitions prevent him from speaking out on what he believes to be a scandal permeating the highest levels of government.
“I’m not gonna back down on this. I don’t care if I lose elections or anything,” Arpaio told WABC Radio Hosts Rita Cosby and Curtis Sliwa Wednesday. “I’m going to tell you again that that document is a forgery … I want to get it to Congress. I want to get it to Congress so they can pass some type of law, regulation, that when somebody runs for president, you oughta check their background, so this won’t happen again.”
Arpaio received a pardon from President Donald Trump in August after he was imprisoned for disobeying a judicial order to stop using racial profiling in enforcing immigration laws. The polarizing lawman, who has been sharply criticized for maintaining inhumane conditions in his Maricopa County jails, came to Trump’s defense during the interview, downplaying the multiple ongoing investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
“You know, you got that situation with [Michael] Flynn and all these guys in Washington they’re going after, because they didn’t check a box in a government report? OK, they didn’t check a box,” Arpaio said.
“Why don’t they check another government report? A forged document. So, I have my ideas.” He added, “We sent it to the FBI two years ago. With a lot of other information. Where is it? … They’re too busy talking about Russia.”
Both Trump and Arpaio have questioned Obama’s citizenship for years, though Trump disavowed his previous statements on the matter during the 2016 campaign.
Arpaio now insists new evidence has come to light that bolsters his theory.
“We came up with some more, new information, not that we need it, but you’ll hear more about it,” he said.
