Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois confirmed President Donald Trump used “shithole” when referring to Haiti and other African nations, according to Reuters Friday.
“Breaking: Democratic Senator Durbin says Trump did use ‘vile, vulgar language, including ‘shithole’, in immigration meeting with lawmakers,” Reuters tweeted Friday morning.
The comments come after the president’s comments in a closed meeting were leaked. The comments were allegedly made in a conversation about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) bill, and leakers assert the president wants to cut off immigration from countries like Haiti in favor of more immigration from other nations.
“Why do we need more Haitians, take them out,” Trump said, according to a report from The Washington Post Thursday.
So far, Trump has denied the comments happened.
“Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously a very poor and troubled country,” The president tweeted Friday. “Never said ‘take them out.’ made up by Dems. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. Probably should record future meetings – unfortunately, no trust!”
Trump addressed the controversy again on twitter, asserting: “The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made-a big setback for DACA!”
