Prosecutors have charged a German nurse with murdering almost 100 patients in northwest Germany, while working at two different hospitals.

Niels Hoegel has been serving a life sentence for two counts of murder and attempted murder since 2015, and was charged with the killings of 97 others on Monday. Hoegel was thought to have killed his victims while working at a clinic in Oldenburg from 1999-2002 and again in Delmenhorst from 2003-2005, according to Yahoo News.

Hoegel spoke at his trial and admitted he would purposely induce cardiac arrest on his patients, because it gave him a thrill to try and revive them.

Investigators examined the toxicology of dozens of patients who had died at the two hospitals and discovered new evidence, leading them to file new charges against Hoegel, Yahoo News reports. Prosecutors found 62 new patient deaths in Delmenhorst and 35 in Oldenburg.

Prosecutors and police examined over 500 patient files and cases and read through hundreds of hospital records, before exhuming 134 bodies to examine for signs of murder, according to Yahoo News. Police are investigating former staff members at both hospitals to gauge their involvement and determine if further criminal charges are warranted.
