MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough accused Fox News of undermining democracy and compared them to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for calling out the deep state operating within the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wednesday on “Morning Joe.”

“When you have Fox News declaring war in their words on the FBI and the Justice Department, the deep state there, when you have people talking about secret societies inside of the FBI, that’s, that is out of what Erdogan’s playbook,” Scarborough said. “Erdogan’s playbook that he used in Turkey to undermine that democracy. And to go after political rivals in his government. And they’re doing it here in America. Right now.”

Fox News host Sean Hannity had accused deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe of helping Hillary Clinton avoid prosecution and said those who politicize the Bureau should be held accountable and thrown in jail.

Scarborough went on to defend McCabe and said people should be thankful for a hero like him who has kept us safe from potential terrorist attacks.

“If you look at what Andrew McCabe has done in serving this country, he was in the New York field office on the SWAT team. He investigated and had a key role in investigating counter-terrorism after September 11th. He held management positions in the counter-terrorism division, and the FBI national security branch,” Scarborough said.

“Look at this man’s face,” he continued. “This man dedicated his life to you and to your family. Keeping you safe from terror attacks in New York City, in Washington, D.C., across the country. Serving with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. And because Donald Trump has completely blown through every single barrier, every single constitutional protection, now some are attacking this American hero because it just fits their political, their political message of the day. It’s despicable.”

Scarborough’s co-host Mika Brzezinski took the discussion as an opportunity to call Trump a “bumbling idiot” and said his actions are leading to the “destruction of a democracy.”

“So much at stake, it’s one thing to look at this president as a bumbling idiot who tweets and says stupid things and is inappropriate, misogynistic, racist and embarrassing. That’s one way of looking at it,” Brzezinski concluded, “But my question is, when is it okay to say that what we are witnessing before our eyes are the rudimentary beginnings of the destruction of a democracy? When should we be worried that this is happening? I say now.”
