The message on a Kentucky church sign addressing sexual harassment and female promiscuity sparked outrage among local women Sunday, prompting the pastor to remove it.

The sign outside of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, Ky., enraged local residents Sunday with the message “Stop Sexual Harrassment. Wear Clothes,” according to WLKY. Passerby said the message was especially hurtful to those who have young daughters and to girls who have been sexually assaulted, despite wearing normal children’s clothes.

“I mean, would you say that to a 6-year-old girl who has been assaulted when they wear overalls and pigtails,” Madilyn Shipman, a local resident, told WLKY.

Some residents went as far as to say that the message was not only offensive to those who suffered sexual assault, but was insulting to all women everywhere.

“Pretty much any female regardless of shape, size, color, race, what they look like, what they dress like, have been a victim of some type of sexual harassment in the past,” local resident Opal Lavon told WHAS11. “So it’s just completely inappropriate and out of line for anybody or any entity to put that message out there.”

The pastor of Emmanuel Baptist removed the message some time after 9:30 p.m. local time. He claimed ignorance of the message’s origin, and told WHAS11 that he did not authorize such a message to be displayed nor did he know who put it there. Regardless, the sign incensed several local mothers.

“As a mom of two daughters, this infuriated me. As a female myself, this infuriated me. As a human being, this infuriated me,” local resident Allyson Condra told WLKY.
