A group charged with preserving Confederate memorials raised a third Confederate flag along a North Carolina highway, according to a Sunday report.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans put up rebel flags on private property neighboring North Carolina highways, reported ABC 13. They are in direct sight of I-40 in Burke County and Catawba County, as well as I-95 in Cumberland County.
The pro-Confederate group plans to raise Confederate flags in all of the 17 counties traversed by I-40 in North Carolina. While civil rights groups did not take issue with the placement of the flags on private property, they thought it was problematic for the Sons of Confederate Veterans not to account for the interpretation of the flags by black Americans and other groups, according to ABC 13.
The flag-raising initiative comes after the removal of Confederate monuments in several areas of the country, often in middle-of-the-night operations. (RELATED: New Orleans Uproots Third Confederate Statue In Early Morning Operation)
