Former Boston Bruins general manager and iconic hockey broadcaster Don Cherry called out climate change believers Saturday night, labeling them “cuckaloos.” Cherry made a detour from his usual sports commentary during “Coach’s Corner.”
Cherry asked co-host Ron MacLean if he or his “left-wing, pinko friends” had anything to say about the increasingly cold winter in light of so many global warming predictions.
“I’m just asking you, the cuckaloos are always saying there are warming trends — we’re freezing to death.”
Not only has Canada been in the midst of a severe winter but on Friday, Ontario’s official groundhog Wiarton Willie predicted that winter would endure for another six weeks.
Cherry’s heresy prompted a swift rebuke from Canada’s own Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna, who tweeted:
For hockey you can turn to Coach’s Corner if you want, for climate change, Canadians turn to scientists.
But Don Cherry might want to think about all those kids who might not have outdoor rinks to play on some day. #CLIMATECHANGEISREAL https://t.co/ObVwwYLiAr

Cherry, who is known for his conservative political opinions and is unabashed about expressing them, has faced media and public backlash in the past for his comments. Regardless, he was voted the seventh greatest Canadian in a CBC production from 2004.
