‘Frasier’ Star John Mahoney Dead At 77

“Frasier” star John Mahoney died over the weekend in hospice care in Chicago, Fox News confirmed Monday. He was 77 years old.

The beloved TV star’s long-time manager Paul Martino said the actor died after a brief hospitalization. The exact cause of death has yet to be released.

Fans of the popular NBC sitcom knew the British-born actor as Frasier’s dad, Martin Crane, a retired ex-policeman whose blue collar traits was always in sharp contrast to his sons.

Mahoney played the role on the television comedy for more than 10 years. More recently, he played a recurring role as Betty White’s love interest on the TV Land sitcom “Hot in Cleveland” and had a part in 2015 on the British drama series “Foyle’s War.”

The actor was nominated several times for an Emmy and was up for two Golden Globe nominations, though he never took home the award.

During his 30 years in the entertainment industry, he also worked on Broadway and won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a play for “The House of Blue Leaves.”
