The Daily Caller New Foundation’s Editor-in-Chief Chris Bedford cautioned the GOP against resting on their laurels and said the party must have a clear message if they hope to be successful in the upcoming midterms, Friday on Fox News.

Bedford discussed Friday’s Congressional budget vote and said GOP leadership ambushed its conservative members into voting for the bill, to avoid another government shutdown.

“Conservatives yesterday were a little bit ambushed,” Bedford said. “There was no time for them to pull together and say, ‘Well, are we the party of restraining spending? Are we the party of repealing of Obamacare? Are we the party of no amnesty?’ And so far it looks like they’re going to strike out on all three of those.”

“President Trump has got a lot going for him,” Bedford continued. “He’s got the tax reform, he’s got these memo fights coming up. But when he goes back to voters in November, how is he going to get these more Republicans that he needs? How is he going to get them into Washington?”

The GOP must develop a clear platform to present to their constituents and cannot rely on the dwindling popularity of Democrats, Bedford said.

“The president didn’t come to D.C. saying he was going to rein in spending. That was never part of his deal. But it is part of the GOP platform,”  Bedford concluded. “And yesterday, last night, Rand Paul was the only person who stood up and said, ‘Hold on a second guys, what are we going to do here?’ And the GOP just barreled over him.”

“You have to have a message to voters and it can’t simply be, ‘Hey guys we’re not Democrats,'” he added. “We need more Republicans.”
