LaVar Ball intends to use his son Lonzo as leverage to get his two other boys into the NBA.

LiAngelo and LaMelo are currently both playing in Lithuania, and their dad recently made it clear that Lonzo will sign with whatever team is willing to take all three.

LaVar told reporter Donatas Urbonas the following:

I want all my three boys to play for the Lakers. But if that does not happen, I’m telling you the story what’s gonna happen first. If they don’t take Gelo this year, I bring Gelo here to play with Melo for two years. Lonzo will be on his third year and I want let ever NBA team know that Lonzo is not going to resign (sic) with the Lakers but will go to any team taht will take all of my three boys. That’s my plan.

Let me say this as clearly as I can so that there’s no confusion. This will almost certainly not work. The only way this plan is a success is if Lonzo continues to become a really good player, and LaMelo is good enough to get in the league on his own. Then, and only then, would a team be willing to eat the contract of LiAngelo. Having one bad deal in return for two very solid players is realistic.

However, this plan will never succeed if LaMelo isn’t good enough to play in the NBA. He’s a highly-touted NBA prospect, but there’s no guarantee it will work out. Injuries can happen, a player can just drop off and a variety of other things could happen. We all know LiAngelo isn’t even close to being good enough for the NBA, and I doubt a team will take the younger siblings unless at least one can play. Having two dead contracts is a lot to ask from an NBA team with a 12 man roster.

So, I wouldn’t hold your breath that this works, but crazier things are possible.
