Several inmates have been charged after brutally attacking a Rikers Island correction officer Saturday, leaving him in the intensive care unit.
A camera inside the George Motchan detention center on Rikers Island captured the brutal attack of 39-year-old officer by at least six inmates, fracturing his spine and causing bleeding in his brain, CBS2 reported.
Raphael Souffrant, the father of the officer who was attacked, described the condition of his son to CBS2 after he visited him in the hospital Saturday.
“He was not able to talk,” Souffrant said in French. “His head was extremely swollen and he had a brace on his neck.”
The attackers, seen in the video, have been identified and are all reportedly members of the “Bloods” gang. They were allegedly mad at the officer for writing them up the day before the incident.

Four inmates were charged Sunday in connection with the incident. Steven Espinal, Devin Burns, Nazeem Francis, and Samson Walston were charged with several counts of gang assault, obstruction of government administration and harassment, and are expected to see a judge Monday.
The officer still remains in the in the intensive care unit at New York-Presbyterian Queens hospital.
