White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah offered the first official reaction to recent revelations that former National Security Advisor Susan Rice sent herself an email minutes before inauguration day 2017 with information about the Trump administration and Russia.

Rice’s email to herself noted a meeting attended by former President Barack Obama, former FBI director James Comey, former DOJ official Sally Yates and former Vice President Joe Biden. During the meeting the officials discussed withholding certain information from the Trump transition team regarding the Russian government.

“That email raises a lot of questions. I can assure you five minutes before you walk out of the door of the White House on January 20th, 2017, you write an email doing something by the book, it is pretty clear you didn’t operate by the book,” Shah said. “It raises a lot of serious questions.”

“It strikes us as odd that, among your activities in the final moments on the final day of the Obama administration, you would feel the need to send yourself such an unusual email purporting to document a conversation involving President Obama and his interactions with the FBI regarding the Trump/Russia investigation,” Senators Chuck Grassley and Lindsey Graham said in an email to Rice.
