Environmental writer Alex Steffen has used the anger in the wake of the tragic Parkland high school shooting to draw parallels between gun violence and man-made global warming.

“If you think the kids are pissed off about what gun manufacturers have done to their schools, wait til they find out what fossil fuel industries have done to their entire future lives,” Steffen tweeted on Tuesday.

“Climate change is a gun aimed at their dreams,” tweeted Steffen, who describes himself as a “visionary writer and editor.”

A week ago, 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., killing 17 students and faculty and wounding others. Survivors of the shooting have since called for additional gun control measures.

About 100 students traveled to Florida’s state capital to pressure lawmakers into passing a ban on assault rifles and high capacity magazines. State lawmakers voted down the ban on Tuesday, sparking outrage from students gathered in Tallahassee.

Steffen on Tuesday used Parkland students’ and activists’ anger to draw attention to his pet issue — global warming.
