Yale Daily News staff reporter Ruiyan Wang wrote a Friday article highlighting a Planned Parenthood volunteer program that encourages students to get involved with the abortion organization.

Wang’s article in Yale’s student newspaper titled, “Planned Parenthood Hosts Volunteer Night,” began with a description of a Planned Parenthood location near the university and highlighted the clinic’s “Volunteer Night” as an opportunity to “forge community and solidarity among supporters.”

Volunteer nights include activities such as making “safe-sex kits,” writing letters to legislators and making buttons. Planned Parenthood organizers also give political updates and inform the volunteers of its most recent and upcoming advocacy agenda.

Included in the write-up was testimony from a Yale student who sees the volunteer night as an empowering call to action. “A little bit of time goes a long way,” Yale’s Reproductive Justice Action League volunteer coordinator Sarah Stein said. She is also a student and staff reporter. “At Planned Parenthood, volunteers are what make the organization. Yale students have the power to make a difference in the fight for reproductive freedom,” she added.

Wang also quoted Gretchen Raffa, Planned Parenthood Southern New England’s public policy director, who has been vocal about encouraging people to share their stories about how state policies regarding women’s health and abortion access have affected them. Students can start a dialogue by writing letters to news outlets, speaking at upcoming hearings and hosting parties to talk about their Planned Parenthood experiences, Raffa noted.

“What we are trying to do in this year is really going on the offense … really to look towards fighting forward and thinking about fighting for a broader aspirational agenda of what the reproductive freedom movement can look like in Connecticut,” Raffa said. It’s all about “asking people to really step into their own power,” she adds.

Wang went on to list the abortion organization’s recent and upcoming activities, citing Planned Parenthood’s “Week of Action” forums and events, along with an upcoming “day of action” on March 14 at Connecticut’s State Capitol.
