Ed Sheeran sold the most albums in the world in 2017, and I’m really having a hard time understanding how that happened.

Reuters reported the following:

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said that “Divide,” which was released in March 2017, went multi-Platinum in 36 nations.

Sheeran’s pop ballad “Shape of You” was also the best-selling single globally of 2017 and has been certified as multi-Platinum in 32 nations, the organization said.

The IFPI said it was the first time that a recording artist has had both the best-selling album and single of the year.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Didn’t Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Lana Del Rey all release albums this past year? Yes, they all did. How did Ed Sheeran beat any of them. It’s a disgrace to music.

Now, please don’t get confused by what I’m saying here. I understand why Sheeran sold a ton of albums. He’s a popular dude, but am I supposed to believe that he is more popular that Taylor Swift? Swift oversees an army of dedicated loyal fans. She also hasn’t every confirmed or denied the rumors my ocean blue eyes, Nike shoes and love of dive bars inspired her to write multiple songs about me. We can just leave that topic for another day.

I guess music is just changing. There used to be a time when a man like George Strait owned the world. The king in the cowboy hat would release songs that would dominate the airwaves. Now America’s sweetheart Taylor Swift can’t even unseat Ed Sheeran. What a sad day for music and Americans everywhere.
