Former Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman sued the Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics team over allegedly mishandling Larry Nassar’s abuse, according to a Friday statement announced Friday.
Olympic gold medalist Raisman, disgraced former doctor Larry Nassar’s victim, filed suit in Santa Clara, Cali., Wednesday, alleging both organizations knew about Nassar but failed to act, according to Buzzfeed News. The two parties should have also done more to protect the victims from Nassar’s abuse and false medical practices, Raisman added.
“After all this time, they remain unwilling to conduct a full investigation, and without a solid understanding of how this happened, it is delusional to think sufficient changes can be implemented,” Raisman told NBC News.
Nassar allegedly had freedom to molest the gymnasts under the guise of medical treatments — sometimes with a USA gymnastic trainer present. One of Nassar’s fake treatments, “intravaginal therapy,” would entail him sticking his fingers up gymnasts’ vaginas. The lawsuit alleges Nassar sometimes had an erection while performing these treatments.
Fellow gymnast Maggie Nichols notified Team USA of Nassar’s abuse in 2015. However, the organization took more than a month to notify the FBI. Team USA also failed to contact Michigan State University, Nassar’s former employer, for allowing Nassar to continue his abuse. Team USA denied the allegations, claiming they were unaware of the gymnastic doctor’s abuse.
Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for his sexual misconduct and separate charges involving child pornography possession.
