The White House issued its first reaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent revelation that his nation will develop new strategic nuclear weapons during call with between President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

“The leaders agreed that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent statements on nuclear weapons development were irresponsible,” the readout of the call declared, marking the first reaction from the White House on the announcement.

Putin unveiled his new nuclear weapons plans in a flashy Thursday video purporting to show a simulated strike on Florida bypassing U.S. missile defense systems in the northern hemisphere.

“I want to tell all those who have fueled the arms race over the last 15 years, sought to win unilateral advantages over Russia, introduced unlawful sanctions aimed to contain our country’s development: All what you wanted to impede with your policies have already happened,” Putin triumphantly said in the video, adding “you have failed to contain Russia.”

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White brushed off Putin’s threat after the video’s release saying “we are not surprised by these statements, and the American people should rest assured that we are fully prepared.”
