A myriad of pro-life group presidents wrote and signed a letter they delivered to Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar Wednesday before his Thursday visit to the White House for St. Patrick’s Day festivities, encouraging him to uphold Ireland’s tradition of protecting life amidst calls to legalize abortion in the Catholic-dominated country.

“While St. Patrick’s Day has always been a day for the Irish all over the world to celebrate their heritage, and politics often takes a backseat on this special day, we feel we cannot remain silent because innocent lives are at stake,” presidents of the March For Life, Students For Life of America, Susan B. Anthony List, Americans United For Life, Live Action, Heartbeat International and other pro-life groups wrote in their letter to the prime minster.

The letter comes at a time when abortion advocates are calling for Ireland to repeal its Eighth Amendment that outlaws and penalizes those who attempt or successfully abort an unborn child. Forty percent of Irish people support unrestricted abortion until 12 weeks in pregnancy and 33 percent think allowing unrestricted abortion until this pregnancy date goes too far, according to a poll in the Independent.

Fewer than three in 10 Irish support elective abortions, according to Breaking News. Support for elective abortions is low, indicating that Ireland’s Repeal The 8th campaign will likely fail. The campaign calls the law “archaic and dangerous” and seeks to repeal Ireland’s Eighth Amendment.

Ireland will hold a referendum on reforming the amendment by the end of May. (RELATED: Ireland’s Abortion Campaign Totally Runs Out Of Steam)

Ireland is “a beacon of hope for the entire world,” the collaborative pro-life letter claims. “Ireland has become one of the leaders in demonstrating life-affirming laws and medical treatment.” Pope John Paul II remarked upon a visit to Ireland that, “Love is never defeated, and I could add, the history of Ireland proves it,” the letter notes.

The late pope’s words carried through to 2018’s 45th annual March for Life that rocked a “Love Saves Lives” theme.
