Top House GOP Leaders Join Calls For Second Special Counsel

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise joined 13 House Republicans in calling for a special second counsel to investigate to investigate the Justice Department and FBI.

New York Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin praised McCarthy and Scalise’s decisions in a tweet Tuesday, calling it “HUGE NEWS.”

The announcement comes after 13 Republican lawmakers sent a letter in late February to Attorney General Jeff Sessions asking him to appoint a second special counsel to look into decisions made by the leadership within the DOJ and FBI to end the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her unauthorized private email server, according to the lawmakers.

The second special counsel would also look into how the investigation into President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign. Special counsel Robert Mueller has yet to find any collusion between Trump and Russia throughout his entire investigation. McCarthy and Scalise will join Zeldin and GOP Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio, Francis Rooney of Florida, Ted Budd of North Carolina, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Mark Meadows of North Carolina, Louie Gohmert of Texas, Claudia Tenney of New York, Jody Hice of Georgia, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Andy Harris of Maryland, Dave Brat of Virginia, and Paul Gosar of Arizona in the call for the second special counsel.

Sessions told Fox News’ Shannon Bream in early March that he “will consider” naming a second special counsel.
