Republican Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert said Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller should be fired.

“I think Mueller should be fired. He should be,” Gohmert said at a meeting with Republican congressmen. “He should never have been–he should never have been appointed, and he should never have accepted. He should be fired.”

“And the only reason that I think, he should not be in actuality fired is because we have some establishment Republicans in the House and Senate that say, ‘oh, gee, if he were to fire Mueller, you know–we might need to impeach the president,'” he continued. “Even one senator saying that may be an impeachable offense. No, it’s not,” he said.

The White House has repeatedly denied having any intention of firing the special counsel.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said this week, “The White House yet again confirms that the president is not considering or discussing the firing of special counsel Robert Mueller.” (RELATED: Sanders: Trump Isn’t ‘Considering Or Discussing’ Firing Mueller)
