A manhunt is reportedly underway for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainee who escaped custody at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City, according to multiple reports.

ICE identified the man as 31-year-old Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, NBC News 4 reported. Having been previously arrested on weapons charges, he is described as a “violent deportee” by local law enforcement officials, the New York Daily News reported.  The fugitive apparently has convictions for multiple weapons and firearms offenses.

ICE agents removed the handcuffs for the security screening process to meet Transportation Safety Administration demands. Mbacke, who was reportedly being deported to Senegal, then bolted at Gate B23 in Terminal 4 at about 8:30 P.M. Tuesday evening. Local police were notified of the escape around 45 minutes later.

An airport-wide search was conducted to capture the man, but authorities were unable to find him. Surveillance footage from the airport showed the man leaving the facility in a taxi. Authorities have yet to apprehend Mbacke.

Mbacke entered the country via legal channels in 2005, but his criminal activities cost him his status. A judge ultimately ordered that he be deported.

Neither ICE nor Port Authority police immediately responded to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

This post was updated with the name of the ICE detainee who escaped custody.
