Former Vice President Joe Biden said he regrets saying he would beat President Donald Trump in a fist fight and admitted he never should have stooped to that level on a Wednesday episode of “Pod Save America.”

Biden was speaking at the University of Miami earlier this month and said, “They asked me if I’d like to debate this gentleman, and I said no. I said, ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.”

Trump hit back on Twitter and called Biden weak, while warning him to lay off the threats.

Biden told “Pod Save America,” “I shouldn’t have said what I said. I shouldn’t have bought it up again, because I don’t want to get down in the mosh pit with this guy.”

“The idea that I would actually physically get in a contest with the President of the United States or anybody else now is not what I said and is not what this is about,” he said. “But I should have just left this alone.”

Biden then suddenly became a champion of women’s right and said he got angry because he was speaking at a college and on college campuses, men have an obligation to protect women.

“One of the passions of my life is ending violence against women,” Biden said. “And I was on a campus talking about how men on campuses have an obligation to protect women. Have an obligation not to engage in degrading talk. Have an obligation to step up … it was in the context of talking about the abuse of women.”
