Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison said that universal basic income has “a lot of merit” at a town hall event in Minneapolis.

The video, obtained by GOP War Room, shows Ellison saying, “So let me just say this about the issue of advancing technology, displacement of workers, and what we’re going to do about it. I personally do think that universal basic income is an idea that has a lot of merit. There are some pilot programs going on right now in the United States.”

This isn’t the first time Ellison has publicly supported basic income. In August 2017, he tweeted:

The idea of universal basic income, supported by a growing amount of people on the left, stipulates that the government use taxpayer money from other welfare programs to send every person in America a small income for no work.
