A three-year-old boy was shot and killed in a a drive-by shooting outside of Atlanta, Georgia, early Monday morning, according to police.

The child’s mother was driving down a road in DeKalb County when she saw a car pull up next to her and open fire, she said. Originally the mother, whose name has not yet been released to the public, said she thought the shooter had a paintball gun; but when she looked in the back seat, she found her child unresponsive with bullet wounds, Fox News reported.

“She found that her child was in the backseat unresponsive and discovered the three-year-old child had been shot,” DeKalb County Police Chief James Conroy told WSB-TV.

The child was immediately taken to the hospital where he died from the gunshot wounds.

“My baby was sleeping; my baby was sleeping in the backseat when I saw the car come past; I saw a paintball gun, but then I heard a real gun. When I heard the gunshot, my baby started crying. I didn’t know my baby was shot,” the mother said to WSB-TV.

The mother identified the car as a gray Dodge Charger, but police were not able to make an arrest. Police reportedly do not know who the shooter is or what the shooter’s motives were.
