Barbara Bush passed away late Tuesday night shortly after she announced her health was failing and she would not seek further preventative treatment.
Bush chose to live out her final days in comfort with her husband and family at her side. “I have no fear of death, which is a huge comfort because we’re getting darn close,” Bush said before her death.
And today, Bush’s family is posting their initial reactions to the news of her death.

“My dear mother has passed on at age 92,” the 43rd President wrote. “Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was. Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions. To us, she was so much more. Mom kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until the end. I’m a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother. Our family will miss her dearly, and we thank you all for your prayers and good wishes.”
Several other members of the Bush family have posted tributes to the former First Lady as well, including Jenna Bush Hager and Laura Bush.
