A southern California town got invaded by tumbleweeds, according to The Associated Press.

Victorville, a desert town near Los Angeles, got briefly taken over by tumbleweeds, the AP reported Tuesday. Strong gusts of wind, some reaching 60 mph, alongside open fields initiated the onslaught Monday of these thorny weeds. Around 100 to 150 homes suffered from the tumbleweed invasion. Some tumbleweed piles were as tall as two-story homes.

“It’s a nasty nightmare,” Victorville resident Bryan Bagwell told The Washington Post.

“The primary goal is to clear the front of the houses, to remove the tumbleweeds in order to allow residents safe access to their homes,” Victorville spokeswoman Sue Jones told the Daily Press.  Victorville and the San Bernardino County Fire Department had crews work overtime to remove the ample amount of tumbleweeds, she also noted.

“With the winds as strong as they are, as soon as they clear certain areas, more tumbleweeds are blowing right back in,” Jones added.

The National Weather Service sent out a warning for strong wind gusts in Victorville Monday. Luckily, as of Tuesday, the windstorm started to decrease.
